THE Road Transport Department (RTD) has been urged to immediately revise the current left hand traffic (LHT) system that has been practiced in this country since before independence. This system indirectly requires steering wheels of all vehicles to be on the right hand side, which effectively imposes drivers to sit, enter and exit from the right side of their vehicles.
Datuk Nor Afraid, leading member of the prominent pensioners P0.25 group, said it was “absurd” and “unacceptable” that all Malaysians are involuntarily made to apply Islamic concept in their daily routines such as driving.
In Islam, doing things from the right side is considered as emulating the practices of the Prophet, a deed that earns them divine reward.
“It shows the blatant infiltration of Islamic conservatism into public domain and we must not allow this to continue,” stated Nor Afraid during a hastily-arranged press conference at her residence.
“This is a grave concern to all moderate thinking Malaysians. We have been discreetly Islamicised since decades ago through this traffic system which was cleverly veiled as a legacy of the British system,” she added.
Nor Afraid also explained that a meeting with the prime minister is currently been set up for them to deliberate the idea of adopting the right hand traffic (RHT) system instead so that steering wheels will be on the left hand side of the vehicles.
“We need to bring this proposal to the prime minister ourselves and not through any middlemen. We have seen through the sarong incident that all this while RTD was actually working for JAKIM in making all Malaysians subconsciously convert to Islam. For all I know, JAKIM’s agents are everywhere,” she said half-whisperingly.
This is the second time in as many days the RTD has been asked to revise its policy. Yesterday, Transport Minister was ordered by an opposition leader to instruct RTD to withdraw its dress code and allow visitors to put on miniskirts, sleeveless shirts or scanty tops. The opposition leader, also a Member of Parliament, is agreeable to the P0.25’s suggestion when contacted later today.
“As a leftist party, we definitely support the idea by P0.25 to make people drive from the left side of their cars because it will make them easier to turn left and away from the mosques,” said Terrace Lol, adding that the true mark of a leftist politician is the ability to use the word left three times in one sentence.
Lawyers group, Angkatan Peguam Tak Bernama (APTB), which has been at the forefront of the successful civil liberty campaign ‘Have Issue, Just Sue’, said the idea was long-awaited when asked for comments.
“We do not foresee any legal obstacle to implement it and everyone should be open to be short-changed..I mean..be open to change. If anything, we all can see each other in courts,” said Sim Pel Tan and Syahtewas, co-presidents of APTB, almost synchronously.
